CHILDREN'S SERVICES
Youth Guidance
The Youth Guidance Division offers a full spectrum of prevention,
intervention and educational programs for young people from elementary
through high school. Our programs build the personal skills needed
to prevent the development of social problems by teaching, practicing
and internalizing the behaviors that make young people successful
at school, at home and in the community.
Based in Pawtucket, the Youth Guidance Division offers programs
in Rhode Island's urban core cities as well as throughout the region.
A+ Adventure Program
A+ Adventure After School Program is a widely recognized and successful
alternative for young people who lack constructive direction and
supervision during the after-school hours. A+ Adventure combines
educational enrichment, the arts, recreation, and a structured approach
to behavioral orientation that builds skills and improves attitudes,
leading to more successful outcomes in adolescence.
Since 1995, our goal has been to engage youth in a creative mix
of interactive learning projects to improve their social and academic
skills. We hope to spark an enthusiasm for learning, which will
keep students enrolled in school, and progressing toward productive
academic and professional careers. Located at Slater Junior High
School in Pawtucket from 2:30 - 6:00pm Monday through Friday, students
benefit from tutored “homework” time each day prior
to engaging in a varied menu of weekly enrichment activities that
are chosen based on the student’s interest and availability.
The program’s case management component allows staff to outreach
to families on a weekly basis to enhance communication about the
student’s progress in school and in the A+ Adventure program.
Social and Emotional Learning Programs
Often seen as the "missing piece in school curricula",
the Youth Guidance Division offers an extensive array of creative
and effective group, classroom-based, and school-wide programming
to build skills with children and teens which assist with conflict
resolution, social development, violence prevention, and the development
of strong interpersonal skills. The program is developed to engage
age-appropriate ways to teach and practice a wide range of social
and problem-solving skills. This extensive program serves schools
in Providence, reaching hundreds of students each
year.
Mentoring
This fee-for-service program offers one-on-one mentoring in the
community. Agencies and organizations can make referrals to this
program. Activities include working with a child in a program of
support on a weekly basis. This could involve going to the movies,
doing homework at the library, or whatever meets their particular
interests or needs. Adults work as a coach, a support, and a mentor
during these activities. The majority of the mentors work full-time
in a job of the human service field. They have backgrounds of working
with children and families.
If you know a young person who would benefit from any of these
programs or are an artist or organization interested in forming
a relationship, please contact us at (401) 725-0450.
