New Hope for Families, Inc.

Programs for homeless families                                             www.newhopefamilies.org

New Hope for Families was started in 1986 by a group of concerned citizens in Pawtucket and Central Falls to provide families with a safe place to go to rebuild their resources and their lives. As the only emergency family shelter in the City of Pawtucket and Central Falls, families come to the shelter from a variety of circumstances including overcrowded housing, eviction, living in cars, or living house to house. Each year, New Hope provides shelter to nearly 50 families.

In response to the homeless prevalence in the area, New Hope for Families created a home that supports its mission of providing structure, support and case management. With the assistance of its bilingual staff, the shelter has the capability to receive low-income families from several different cultures and backgrounds, including those who speak English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Cape Verdean. Currently, the shelter has a capacity of 24 beds and can accommodate up to 6 families at one time for a maximum of 12-weeks. New Hope also has two transitional apartments that allow families to continue their process of self-sufficiency within the shelter.

New Hope provides the following to each family:

  • A room where a family can live, bathroom, living room, laundry facilities and common kitchen where they prepare their own food
  • Support and structure to be able to be self-sufficient
  • Case management to help set and attain individual goals
  • Commitment to helping families find permanent housing within 2-3 months
  • Workshops on various subjects that prepare families to deal with their current situation
  • Counseling and referrals as needed
  • Activities for children, such as tutors, and arts and crafts
  • Parenting skills
  • Weekly house meetings to learn how to live in a group setting and assume responsibilities
  • Transitional apartments, depending on availability and qualifications

In July 2005, New Hope for Families affiliated with Gateway Healthcare allowing for much needed infrastructure support in the areas of clinical services, human resources and staff trainings. Thanks to this affiliation, New Hope families are provided with support in the areas of mental health services, family counseling and crisis intervention during their stay at the shelter and after securing permanent housing.

In February 2006, New Hope began expanding programs to include permanent supportive services through collaboration with area property managers.  New Hope shelter residents move to permanent housing at the designated properties while continuing to receive supportive services to ensure growth and self-sufficiency.
